Ink Press

This piece is an ink press art piece. This was an interesting piece to make but I enjoyed it a lot! This one was another piece that was a part of my senior AP Art studio portfolio that was assigned to us by my teacher.

We started off by deciding what color of pink we wanted to use. We were able to choose between black, dark purple, or dark blue and I picked dark purple. After we selected the color, we were instructed to use a roller and roll out a (very thin) spoon full of ink on a 24 by 24 inch slice of glass. Once the ink is equally distributed across the glass sheet, we were given different types of tools to scrape off and move the ink around while creating patterns. Once of the great things about this project was that while using ink if you were to mess up you could just scrape off the ink and restart. It took me about 3 or 4 tries until I got a design that I enjoyed.

After finishing the design in the ink, we were instructed to use an ink rolling press. I included a picture so that you can get a visual of what we had to use. We were to place our glass sheet, ink side down, on a piece of paper on the ink press. There are handles on both sides off the press that are used to roll the piece of paper underneath the rollers where the ink is pressed down onto the paper.

The parts where we strapped off the ink within our design is called negative space. It was our decision on how we filled in those negative spaces to give the pressed ink more life. Some student choice to fill it in with oil pastels, watercolor, and acrylic paint. However, I chose to use Copic markers. I chose the colors that I used from being inspired with the Polaroid camera logo colors.

This project was very interesting and fun to create. It taught be how to use negative space within my design and how to use an ink rolling press. I loved how this one turned out and I ended up submitting it to an art show where people of my town could go see it in our city’s public library.

  1. Hey Annaleia! I really enjoy this piece and it is one of my favorite pieces I have seen from you. I really enjoy abstract art, especially because sometimes I have a hard time making it because my forte is hyper realism, which is the exact opposite of abstraction. I have looked at this piece a million times and it never occurred to me that the colors were inspired by the Polaroid logo, so that was fun to find out!

  2. Hi Annaleia, you have beautiful artwork! Art has never been something I was very good at, especially when it came to drawing. I can barely draw a basic flower without messing it up. I wish you the best of luck with your work, I hope to see it in a gallery one day.
