Broken Rose

This past week, I was approached by the pastor at my dads church, Trinity United Methodist, and she asked me to do her a favor. Their message this month is over how God creates beautiful things about of broken pieces. Pastor Meghan wanted to incorporate art work being created while my dad played the song You Make Beautiful Things on the piano. She wanted me to paint it during live time while the 3 minute song played but I cannot work that fast so I suggested doing a digital piece and showing a time lapse of me creating it to be played with the song.

This piece is called Broken Rose. I really focused on the message and wanted to make sure that my drawing would’ve made sense with the meaning. I thought about drawing a girl with hurtful words all over her body such as ugly, mistake, and disappointment and then having them turn into kind words like beautiful, worthy, and blessing. But I thought that would’ve been too basic of an idea. Then it popped into my head! Roses are very beautiful flowers, they are symbolic for love, romance, and confidence. So I draw a rose but with only using the word “broken”. I felt that that was a stronger idea because I created something that is known for its beauty but only using that word broken to draw it!

That style of art is called a Calligram. Googles definition of a calligram is text arranged in such a way that it forms a thematically related image. It can be a poem, a phrase, a portion of scripture, or a single word; the visual arrangement can rely on certain use of the typeface, calligraphy or handwriting, for instance along non-parallel and curved text lines, or in shaped paragraphs. The image created by the words illustrates the text by expressing visually what it says, or something closely associated; it can also, on purpose, show something contradictory with the text or otherwise be misleading. Overall, everyone liked how the church incorporated art into the service and a lot of people came up to me and congratulating me on how talented they think I am which was definitely a confidence boost!

I inserted a picture of the final piece and the time lapse video that was played!

  1. Wow Annaleia, this is an amazing piece! I can't even imagine the amount of effort and focus this piece took. I think it was a really good idea to interpret the literal words in the title of the song to develop a work of art. Also, the fact that you got to create this piece in collaboration with your father and your church makes it all the more special :)

  2. I love this piece, and the fact that you were approached to make something that really meant a lot to you. I love when a piece is integrated with more than one style of art, and the song title and the piece work so well together.
