Norfolk VA Photography

For this weeks blog, I thought I would share a different form of art... photography!! I have always thought photography was very interesting and I love all the different things you can do with it. The pictures I’m showing today came from my Landscape project in the photography class I look spring semester of my freshman year.

We were given this assignment right before we went home for spring break so we could take pictures of our home towns. I am from Chesapeake Virginia and have been living there since 2010 so I thought I would take pictures in the city that’s about 15 minutes away from me called Norfolk. Norfolk is a waterfront city in southeastern Virginia. It’s home to the worlds largest Naval Base Stations on the Chesapeake Bay. I have always enjoyed the city so every chance I would get to go to Norfolk I would take it. One of my favorite parts of the city is the downtown area, where there are tall buildings, street after street of shops and restaurants, and the beautiful view of the Chesapeake Bay.

The objective of the photography assignment was to use our knowledge of the settings of the camera such as the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to capture photographs that showed the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is a way of visually dividing up the picture into three sections. For example, the first picture I included shows the view down Granby Street. The first section of that photo would be the line of buildings to the left, the second section is the street with the cars, and the third section would be the other side of the buildings to the right. For the second picture I included, the first section is the glass building to the left, second section is the tan colored building in the distance, and the third section is the orange brick building. For the last picture, the first two sections of the picture would be the bay with the naval ships and the third section is the pink apartment building.

We also started learning how to use the Adobe program, Lightroom. Lightroom is a photo editing program where you can change the contrast, exposer, warmth, brilliance and more. I was the only out of state student in that class so it was a fun experience to be able to bring something different to the table and get to show off my hometown and where I grew up to my fellow classmates.

  1. Annaleia!! I cannot get over how amazing the photographs are, they look like stock photos (that is a compliment). I remember doing this project at the same time you did and my pictures cannot even compare. I look forward to seeing more of your art!

  2. I’ve always loved photography, and I think it’s so interesting to hear exactly what kind of rules are set on you to do a photography assignment. This city is gorgeous, and so is that sunset. I love that you do so many different kinds of art, and are willing to share them.

  3. Annaleia! These photos are pure talent. I've taken a photography class before and I know it's tricky to capture photos exactly how you want them but you nailed it! I loved how you taught us a little about your photos and how you used the rule of thirds. I've always been a bit jealous of photographers because I think it's so interesting how they can capture one photo in a million different ways. I hope to read and see some more of your art along with photography!
