Orange Slice
Today, I thought I would share one of my greatest achievements of winning second place in an art show my senior year of high school. My piece was titled Orange Slice and was apart of my concentration. In this blog post, I will explain the reasons for which I created this piece and the process behind creating it.
I created this piece when I was in AP Art Studio my senior year of high school. Unlike other AP high school classes, you do not have a final exam. You have a final portfolio you have to turn in. In that portfolio you have 24 final pieces, 12 relating to your concentration and 12 assigned to you by your teacher. I started off the year with my concentration being “The Little Things in Life” where I focused on small beautiful things we see in our everyday lives, for example things like lady bugs, small flowers, buttons etc. Half way through the year, I realized that it wasn’t my strongest idea. So I switched my concentration to “All different types of life forms and objects that interact with water”. Although I switched it to a simplistic topic, I expressed my creativity through exploring color harmonies and evolving from a paint media to a digital composition.
For this piece, I used multiple different types of media’s and tools. First I started off with sketching out the orange slice then continued to paint the rim and pulp of the orange with watercolor paint. I chose watercolor because it gives it a matte finish and orange pulp has that same texture. For the inner darker sections of the orange I used Gauche paint, which is a thinker version of watercolor. So it acts as if its watercolor but with a risen texture. While I was applying the Gauche paint, I placed saran wrap on top of it before it dried to give more of a textured look. Finally, I finished off with applying Mod Podge, which is a glossy thin version of Elmer's glue, on only the juicy parts of the orange to give a wet-looking effect.
I entered my piece in an art show that my city’s public library was holding and I received second place out of 50+ art pieces. To this day, it is still one of my proudest moments in my art career.
Hi Annaleia! This piece is astonishing! The creativeness through the type of paint and texture added to the painting is brilliant. I loved how you approached this idea of an orange and portrayed it with such realism. I personally enjoy looking at art, unfortunately I don't have the skill to create it, but that's for you! I also wanted to congratulate you on receiving second place at the art show, can't imagine that feeling! Anyway, I enjoyed reading this post and I can't wait for you to show off more of your paintings!
ReplyDeleteHey Annaleia! This post is amazing! First I would like to congratulate you on your success in the art show, it was well deserved. This piece is a prime example of why I believe you are one of the bests artists that I have had the privilege's of knowing and collaborating with. Not only is your delivery technically strong but it is also creative. Such as the utilization of guache paint and plastic wrap to give your piece life, texture, and movement. Being technically inclined is a skill as well as being creative and not every artist has acquired both, but you have. Keep creating!
