Lost

For today’s blog I thought I would take a break from sharing about my AP art portfolio and talk about one of my personal pieces I did last semester. The piece I want to share today is called Lost. I wanted to depict a girl that was lost in her thoughts.

Lost is a digital piece. I created it on my iPad using the program Procreate. One of my favorite things to do when creating something digitally is to collage a bunch of other pieces of different artworks into my own idea. These are all the different collaged images I used for this piece: the girls face, her hair and hat, skeleton hand, cigarette, mushroom shaped smoke, and the swirl going around her head. Originally, I wanted to keep this drawing in black and white like a more detailed sketch but then I realized I could express my message more with a strong color palette. I chose the colors I used because red and green are complementary colors, meaning they are on opposite sides of the color wheel. Since they are opposite, it creates a high contrast and high impact color combination. I chose to use red and green because I personally believe its the most earthy complementary pair (compared to yellow and purple, blue and orange). I wanted to keep a nice balance between cool and warm tones so that’s why I decided to add the orange/yellow and aqua blue colors.

Something interesting about this piece is that the colored version that is attached wasn’t originally going to be the final product. I like to sketch out my color ideas by being very sloppy with where I put it only to get a general feel on where I want to place my colors. Once I did that, I felt like that style of coloring fit with the message I wanted to incorporate into this piece. I really enjoyed how this drawing came out. At first, I wasn’t confident in it because I had a hard time figuring out what I wanted to collage together but in the end I think it turned out pretty decent.

Feel free to let me know in the comments what type of message are you receiving from this piece? What does it say to you?

  1. Hey Annaleia! I rally love this piece, I remember when you first showed it to me and I was amazed at you skill level when it came to digital art, especially because I already knew you were so talented when it came to non-digital art. As always, I look forward to seeing more of your pieces!
